Touch Newsletter #222
Welcome to the Touch Newsletter #222. Zachary Paul is touring Europe in February 2020 with three live shows: AB Salon, Brussels with Jana Winderen and Special Guest 22.02.20; Café Oto, London with UnicaZürn, Bill Thompson and Howlround 25.02.20; Iklectik, London with CM von Hausswolff, Tears|Ov and Special Guest 26.02.20. Further details below.
On 1 February 2000, Fennesz and Rosy Parlane played live together in Melbourne, Australia. Now, 20 years later, Touch has rereleased the recordings, available from Bandcamp, remastered by Simon Scott and with new artwork by Jon Wozencroft.
Simon Scott’s own new digital-only release “Emergency Exit” was composed from field recordings of flood water and burning embers captured during 2019 in the Fens near Cambridge, where he is based. They are a microcosm of a much bigger global crisis - “climate change”.
ELEH’s “Living Space” is now available to pre-order on limited edition gatefold Vinyl LP, releasing 28 February 2020.
Jana Winderen’s “Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone” has been repressed on CD – details below. Also available again – a handful of extra copies of Aaron Turner’s “Interminable Conniption” are now on sale from The Tapeworm’s Bandcamp page.
On Wednesday 12 February, Bana Haffar presents a free hands-on workshop at BMCM+AC, Asheville, NC, USA. For more info visit blackmountaincollege.org
And finally… “UnEngland” by Howlround and Dolly Dolly was released on Howlround’s own The Fog Signals imprint at 11pm on Friday 31 January 2020 to mark Britain officially cutting off its nose to spite its face. Produced in a single frantic hour the night before… Words by Dolly Dolly, sounds by Robin The Fog. 100% of the proceeds from this track will be donated to Extinction Rebellion. Following “Slow Fade for Hard Sync” (2009) and “Location Momentum” (2010), “Living Space” is Eleh’s third physical release for Touch. Seven years in the making, this new release consolidates the artist’s parallel narrative between a series of vinyl and CD releases for Important Records – where the emphasis is on a minimalist aesthetic – to a visual counterpoint that hints at the cinematic and painterly qualities of the music.

The marginal ice zone is the dynamic border between the open sea and the sea ice, which is ecologically extremely vulnerable. The phytoplankton present in the sea produces half of the oxygen on the planet. During spring, this zone is the most important CO2 sink in our biosphere. In “Spring Bloom in the Marginal Ice Zone” the sounds of the living creatures become a voice in the current political debate concerning the official definition of the location of the ice edge.
The listener experiences the bloom of plankton, the shifting and crackling sea ice in the Barents Sea around Spitsbergen, towards the North Pole, and the underwater sounds made by bearded seals, migrating species such as humpbacks and orcas, and the sound made by hunting saithe, crustaceans and spawning cod, all depending on the spring bloom.

“Interminable Conniption” finds avant metallurgist Aaron Turner ruminating on the aberrant possibilities of solo electric guitar. Herein Turner focuses on psychoemotional atmospherics built from the sonic detritus of a full-stack and a few effects pedals. The resultant tracks are minimally-layered spontaneous performances interweaving quivering drones, distended melodies, and saturated dissonance into an immersive architecture of burbling turbulence and uneasy quietude.
Besides his solo works, Aaron Turner is renowned for his participation in the bands SUMAC and ISIS. His other projects include Old Man Gloom, Mamiffer and House of Low Culture, as well as collaborations with other artists such as Tashi Dorji, Daniel Menche, Keiji Haino, and Circle. He is the founder of Hydra Head Records and co-founder of SIGE Records.
