Touch Newsletter #307
Welcome to the Touch Newsletter #307. It does seem like all bets are off for 2024. The growth industry we witness is the manufacture of suffering and instability – disguised as incompetence. Lying is bigger business than Taylor Swift. Everywhere you look, there is the potential for tectonic shifts and the damage that would result, and nobody knows what will happen next.
To have survived this far is one thing… As we approach our 42nd year of activity, we hope to bring you challenging and involving releases which offer a different perspective on how things could be.
“To Have & To Hold”, the recent benefit night for the London venue Iklectik (who are threatened with eviction), along with the ELEH digital release “KICKTILE” has so far raised over £1,150 for their fighting fund. Thank you to all the artists and everyone who bought tickets and ELEH’s Bandcamp release, or have supported in other ways. Venues are seriously under threat and a new way of thinking is evolving about how to present live events and the relationship between locations, producers, audiences and artists. A more fluid but no less exciting situation is in process – just one example is EMOM: Electronic Music Open Mic nights – electronicmusicopenmic.com. It might be a modest start but many positive things are happening in response to the latest austerity and pressure.
Coming next year we have vinyl editions of Youmna Saba’s “Wishah وِشاح” (released by Ruptured in Canada but available shortly through our bandcamp page) and Jacaszek’s superb 2020 recording “Gardenia”, long out of print. We are currently working on a solo release by KMRU. We have many more projects in the pipeline and other surprises in store.
Ian Wellman’s first solo album, “The Night the Stars Fell” (Ash 15.0) will arrive early in the new year. Fennesz is working on a new album, his first since “Agora”; and “Venice” will be reissued as a 20th anniversary edition with extra material on CD, remastered by Denis Blackham. The Tapeworm will be celebrating its 15th anniversary too…
2024 is a leap year.
